What topic should I pick ?!!
1. Compare and contrast modern and postmodern design. Should designers favor one?
2. Conduct a semiotic analysis on a piece of political propaganda using any of the set of concepts.
These two topics are entirely different form of interest and attention to the viewers of this blog. In order to select a favorable topic to my liking, research is needed.
Let’s dive into topic 2 by breaking it down into two subtopics! Semiotics and political propaganda in order to get a clear image on what it is. As we all are familiar that semiotics (science of signs) is perceived as a universal language as it communicates with people across the globe in an element that helps us view and understand design better without any words needed. On the other hand, political propaganda is simply a negative sense where politicians whom make false claims and rumors to get benefits or simply just to escape from any troubles they have caused. In other words, a negative manipulation of a significant symbol. When two of these subs combine creates a whole new level. The political propaganda comes in varies expressions such as emotionally, logically or even ethnically. They are mainly used to express issues, image, positivity and negativity.
Let’s say the politician would like to appear as a warm politician? The politician would simply wear a red costume to express the warmth and passionate perspective. From this context we know that red costume is signifier and warmth and passionate is denotation. There are multiple ways for politicians to express themselves without any context or words needed.
Signifier : In any form of material that signifies, it could come in various form such as sound, expression or a photograph
Denotation : The most basic description of the literal meaning

Moving onto topic 1! Before diving deep down into which movement should designers favor more, the topic is separated into two topics. As designers we are all familiar with the art movement and the influence but do, we really know why and how has the essence has stay in our hearts or why do some designers love impressionism and some don’t? In this topic we are give two movements to choose and explain which movement it’s more favorable.
A crash course about modernism is that it’s one of the leading design movement during the twentieth century. It was used as a democratic tool for social change.
Personally, I adore semiotics as it was my very first topic that I have chosen for my thesis at the previous semester. However, going back to that particular topic would not expand my knowledge to various topics. So, the chosen topic of this blog would be the 1st option !
