Entry 6: Later Applications

How is it even relatable to today ?!!

The question of the entire topic of this blog is that which ‘ism’ should designer favour more? In order to answer the question, we need to dive into the later applications of modernism and postmodernism to prove to us which ‘ism’ should be favour more.

Modernism :

Remember when I explained about the key developments of modernism?  Modernism concept is simply a desire to exploit the most advance material there is and technology to express the simple forms, smooth finishing and the use of white space.

Sounds familiar?  Modernism concept has its similarities with Minimalism. They are both famous for simplicity, cleanliness, and the value of empty spaces.
Let’s take Sam Hecht Muji phone for an example. From the image it’s obvious that this product has met all the criteria of the elements.

Postmodernism:

Remember when I explained about the key developments of postmodernism? Let’s take Glaser “I Love NY” campaign as an example, the decorative qualities appear to be humorous and playful in which it’s somewhat similar with the later applications of Memphis. For example, the Kozmo Blocks by Karim Rashid, even though the blocks come in various colors but it gives off a playful mood to it.

Entry 7 : The favorite one

Which one should I favor more ? As we all know the objective of this blog is that which “ism” should designer favour more. Personally, I view that designers have a variety of art styles in terms of how they play their colors, space and the list go on and on. I believe that there isn’t exactly one “ism” that designers should favor. However, there’s a certain style that designers tend to pick on, let’s take modernism for an example as have mention at the previous blogs modernism is all about the simple forms, smooth finishing and the use of white space. There are multiple brands out there that embraced these simple forms which is Muji. They are well known for their simplicity in their products and packaging. On the other hand, postmodernism was the era they all rules of style were broken from there was freedom. Remember when I explained about the “I Love NY” campaign has similarities with the Kozmo Blocks because they are simply colorful and humorous? There are multiple br...

Entry 4: The new avant garde literature

Do you know what it is ?!! “The new avant grarde literature” know as postmodernism, the term itself was born around 1970s from scepticism and suspicion that challenges the notion of the universal certainties and reality. The movement itself is simply a reaction against the essence of modernism and it’s known to embraced the complexity of meaning based on experiences of every individual. It simply drew a line on philosophy during the late twentieth century and it supports every individual experiences was more a concrete rather than abstract principles. To certain extent the movement itself had defies the definition as there is not one particular postmodern style or theory, as it has embraced multiple approaches toward art making in which it has collapsed the distinction between high culture and mass culture of our everyday life. It simply broke the rules about styles and from here we know that the era of freedom has begun. References: Tate. A. (2019). Modernism. [onlin...
